  • (historical) In the forced conscription system (often translated as "allotment system" into English, see Wikipedia article linked above) valid in Finland from 1682 to 1901, a group of estates responsible for providing an armed soldier for the crown.
  • (historical) Smallest operative grouping in the armed forces of Sweden consisting of 12 to 20 men, corresponding roughly to the platoon of modern armies.
  • (idiomatic) order, discipline; chiefly in the expressions laittaa (joku) ruotuun ("to discipline, impose order on someone"), poiketa ruodusta ("to step aside, deviate from the right or proper path, especially from an ideological point of view") and pysyä ruodussa ("to toe the line, fall in line").
